Green Acres~ "Organic Aquaponics"

CodeGreenCommunity
Uploaded on Jul 12, 2011

Join me as I travel to Green Acre Organic where Tonya and Gina have built a fantastically abundant commercial Aquaponic system. In an Aquaponic system Tilapia are grown in a closed loop cycle along with plants.

Bacteria break down the Tilapia's waste into food the plants can eat. This system is totally safe, water smart, and energy efficient!

Well I am quite a bit away from cycling or even adding the water. Mother Nature is fighting us every step of the way.

We got more rain and a tighter schedule for the coming week. Still working on the Service Truck and cleaning up the property.

So the county can come and do their yearly inspection as we are housing our equipment at home. I think it is just a way to get extra money from us myself.

I did get two larger tanks ready and was lucky as a local gas station needed a new system. And we hauled the old one away.

So that is about all the tanks I can think we will need. Even if we decide to try and go small business or even a commercial garden.

If and/ or when the ground drys out. I will start setting the Telephone poles and framing out the rails for the Cattle Panels to sit upon which will be the top for the Greenhouse.

I am not to worried about Plastic just yet, as the summer air will most likely be here before I am up and cycling.

My Uncle lives right next door and has a small one acre pound.

We might try and catch some Blue Gills, Channel Cats and whatever else that is in there and start our system with them and some of the pond's water to help with getting the nutrients up and running in our system as I am way behind schedule .

Well I placed some of the things that I will need in the Carousals and Ferris wheels from Amazon on the site today and I will place them on my "A" Store page also at my website along with all the others from the other Blogs and from the site Its self.

Well  I was going to use the Green Acre's song, but these Ladies bet me to It. Looks like they are making their system work. So If they can do It we should be able to, too right? I hope so!

I got to run because I am under the gun.

Sorry this was a fast video after an ugly day at work. We lost our engine in the Service Truck and that set the pace for the rest of the day, Towing Fees, New engine cost, and new Install kits; Hoses, belts, oils, etc. this stuff ain't cheap and it means someone has to work the weekend...

It is about 5:00 pm here in this video. It turned out to be a nice day weather wise.

Here is some of the stuff that I have so far gathered together to make our Aquaponics Garden. I am trying to be as green as possible and as cheap as possible Big family big garden or at least the need is there for one and it should justify It's cost and maintenance fees.

This is our first Aquaponics Garden ever. We are trying this out because the old style garden was just to rough to maintain by ourselves. And with our busy schedules. We are forever running kids and chasing jobs.

I will do better as things slow down in the coming weeks. Not that we are wanting them to slow down. But it often does.

Well I said I would get a video up and I have. I am still learning to use this Flip Cam and the little camera I got off of eBay.com

I will do better as things slow down and I get some time to sit and think We were rushing the kids around and we were tired as the day was a rush to catch up for time lost because of the blown engine. Excuses yes I know, but they are valid ones.

I am hoping the weather stays nice and drys the ground out. I am not sure if you can see and hear how wet it still is here in IN. but I will work on this Aquaponic System every chance I get these next few weeks.

As we have to get the yard straighten out any way and the boss wants to get  the camper set up and the Barn floor poured and the insulation done and tons of other stuff.

I am wanting to focus on the Aquaponics garden and I am hoping as It gets set up and running that the rest of the gang will get a notion or take an interest in It too.

VERMAPONICS~ "Is this the Holy Grail of Aquaponics?"

This is one of my favorite experiments. There is absolutely no reason why we cannot add worms to Aquaponic ebb and flow beds. They improve soil-less medium by loosening up compacted areas and add all sorts of elements that improve root and plant growth. This is the missing link to growing heaving feeding plants. May even eliminate need for filtration.

I thought the red wiggles were the better compost worm but I am new to all of this stuff. Donnie/ Sinbad the Sailor Man

Aquaponics is an amazing system that allows you to integrate a fish-filled pond or tank with grow-beds for vegetables and herbs.

These very cool systems are a great approach to sustainability and they can be quite simple to build. Check-out this project featuring Charlie from Ecolicious showing you how! Greenhouse~ "Home made with Cattle Panels"

Uploaded on Jul 2, 2011
One thing I found handy with this Greenhouse is as the tomato plants grew taller and taller there was always a place to tie the plants up to. I finally switched all the buckets to a double bucket system, you can find more videos here that shows how to build them.

I plan to tie all the buckets together with hydroponics hose to be able to have an automatic watering system next year. I was able to put the greenhouse up in a week, it now has chicken wire along the bottom with nylon screen on the inside with 1/4 inch square holes in it.

The screen came from a roll that was left over from when I insulated my house with cellulose insulation I bought from Regal Industries. It was used to keep most of the moths out. I closed it in with plastic for the winter and the broccoli plants are still growing from last year and it is now 2-17-12.

This is the design that we are going to model with our greenhouse build a 12x30 ft poly tube until the colder weather hits. Donnie/ Sinbad the Sailor Man

So far we have two Holding tanks (1) 1,000 gallon (1) five hundred gallon)and four telephone poles and four different water troughs 2@110 gallons and 2 @50 gallons and a variety of PVC Pluming joints with about one hundred and eighty ft.of four inch pipe.

Several smaller tanks (1)Sump (2) Swirlers (2) Equalizers and (3) Lift Siphons as well as some wood chips for the green house floor and 26 concrete blocks.  Plus whatever else I can scrounge up between my Uncle's junk piles and those of  his son's.  Waiting for the yard to dry up some, because we have had several inches of standing water in It after last weeks deluge of rain fall.

We are going to start by stringing it all out and then do our best to get it all set up, plumbed, and then cycling. As soon as the ground is dry enough to work on. Wish us luck this is going to be all new to us as we get started here in the near future. I will be posting videos from my flip cam as we move through the building process.

Aquaponics Made Easy Today

Uploaded on Oct 22, 2011
http://www.aquaponics4you.com/?hop=n1...

For many years there has been a general debate about the efficiency of Aquaponic systems. The more traditional supporters of hydroponics believe that hydroponics is sufficient for producing quality vegetables and fruits. I'm not debating the fact that hydroponics has served its purpose well. But as with all agricultural technologies, hydroponics has its own limitations.

Small Scale Aquaponics

foodfarmerearth
Published on Mar 13, 2013
It's obvious Ann Forsthoefel of "Aqua Annie" is excited by aquaponics, the growing of plants fed by nutrients from fish, which in turn provide a source of food when they reach maturity.

"There are so few inputs compared to growing crops in the soil," she said.

With her gardens, she's constantly building up the soil that is depleted at the end of each growing season. The beauty of Aquaponics, she said, is that there isn't that constant work because the fish are giving nutrients to the plants. How to Build Your Own Aquaponics System

These are Simple Stand alone systems Here which I have come to adapt into my greenhouse Aquaponics project.

One Tub One Bed and One Pump per system is a starting point most of these look to be about fifty gallons of water which could supply enough nutrients to two or three of these types of beds.

The Advantage is better Water Quality control and crop protect in case of system failure or contamination or Illness to the fish.

Using one Water source save power and is less costly but independent systems provides a fail safe. To the other beds and crops unless it is an airborne Cause. Pest or disease

This is the perfect way to make your children responsible. They will need to feed the fish each and every day and make sure that the air pump is working perfectly so that the fish get enough oxygen.

Also, they will have to monitor the state of the vegetables and when they get yellowish they need to announce you. These are not easy tasks, but will give them a sense of responsibility and will know that someone relies on them.

Also, they will be able to see how fish and plants grow, which will expand their knowledge about the vegetable and animal world.

For working adults

Vegetables are essential for a good nutrition, yet you can not always find fresh, organic veggies in the market.

With an Aquaponic garden in your house you will have fish and veggies for your family without depending on the market.

Also, you will save some money without investing too much of your precious time.

For retired seniors

When retirement comes, many people seek activities which do not require too much effort. Aquaponic gardening will keep you occupied for a while, yet without getting over your entire day.

In addition to that it will spare them of going to the market to buy veggies, it will help them save some money and at the same time will not require them too much effort.

If they place the system at their waist level they will not need to bend or stretch, which will make this activity far more pleasant.

No matter what age group you are a part of, Aquaponics can prove to be rewarding for you. Give it a try and you will never want to live without this system!

Green House Constructed with a Thermal Mass Rocket Mass Heater

paulwheaton12

http://permies.com

Greenhouse construction with a rocket mas heater, including an excellent demonstration of the rocket mass heater sideways burn. The greenhouse construction class is taught by Ernie and Erica Wisner, featuring the rocket mass heater techniques of Ianto Evans (of cob cottage company fame). I cannot think of a better approach to greenhouse heating.

This is the first phase of building this greenhouse. The focus is on the steps of building the rocket mass heater.
This video has an excellent demonstration of the sideways burn - or fire burning sideways.Since this will be an oehler style solar greenhouse, then it probably won't need much heat. But it will be a bonus. And the heated air could also be piped into the house.

A rockey mass heater is typically 10 times more efficient than a regular wood stove. And 20 times cleaner. A mike oehler style greenhouse construction is probably the most efficient greenhouse known.

A rocket stove mass heater or rocket mass heater, is an innovative and efficient space heating system developed from the rocket stove, a type of hyper-efficient wood-burning stove, named in the 1970s, but dating back millennia in concept, and the masonry heater.

Wood is gravity fed into a "J-shaped" combustion chamber, from where the hot gases enter a heavily insulated metal or fire-brick vertical secondary combustion chamber, the exhaust from which then passes along horizontal metal ducting embedded within a massive cob thermal store.

The thermal store is large enough to retain heat for many hours and typically forms part of the structure of the building.

They have proved to be popular with natural buildings and within permaculture designs; they are normally self-built and are not yet recognized by all building codes which regulate the design and construction of heating systems within buildings.

An internal vertical insulated chimney, the combustion chamber, ensures an efficient high-temperature burn and creates enough draft to push exhaust gases through the rest of the system.

Flue gases are cooled to a relatively low temperature within the thermal store, approximately 50°C, and steam within these gases condenses into liquid releasing the associated latent heat of evaporation, which further increases the efficiency in the manner of a condensing (gas) boiler.[1]

History

The key principles of the rocket (cooking) stove were described in 1982.[2] Ianto Evans of the Cob Cottage Company then described how the same combustion principles could be used to heat a building in his 2006 book, 'Rocket Mass Heaters' based on research and experience in many countries over a 30 year period.[3]

Efficiency

From "Rocket Mass Heaters: Superefficient Woodstoves YOU can build" (Ianto Evans and Leslie Jackson, Cob Cottage Company, ISBN 0-9663738-3-9)
p. 12: "In my own cottage I burn only about two-thirds of a cord of (fir and alder) firewood a year, while my neighbors average 3-5 cords. You can usually tell when any of the neighbors are around by the cloud of smoke coming out of their chimneys. By contrast, we burn so clean that visitors coming into my house want to know how come it's so snug without the stove burning. Imagine their surprise when they learn that in fact, it is burning merrily."
-Ianto Evans
Quotes from users
p. 80: "It is extremely efficient, reaching 90 percent combustion, and almost all the heat is then stored in the cob mass bench, to be slowly released over days!" -Ianto Evans
"As for our own bench, it takes about four hours to get totally warm. From a 4-6 hour burn time once a day or every other day, we can maintain a comfortable temperature in the house of about 65 [degrees] F, even on cold days." -Tom and Calleagh
p. 89 ibid: "On days with no sun we run our stove two to three hours in the evening, burning about a five gallon bucket full of wood. For regular winter temperatures of 35 to 50 [degrees] F, this keeps our house at a comfortable 60 [degrees] to 65 [degrees]F." - Bernhard Masterson
p. 93 ibid: "Ianto and I measured 1000 [degrees] C (1800 [degrees] F) in the combustion chamber and 32 [degrees] C (90 [degrees] F) in the top of the chimney --- the rest of the heat was kept inside the house." - Flemming Abrahamsson

Issues

  • No rocket mass stove or stove design has ever been safety certified by the UL.
  • Stoves are often self-built to varying dimensions to suit the location and requirements, using a variety of materials.
  • Initial lighting of the fire may produce smoke that is often not drawn into the exhaust system until the burning chamber is heated and drawing air.
  • A common problem with some designs is "smoke-back", where smoke from the fire is released back into the interior rather than outside. Smoke-back could indicate a serious risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. This issue could be a result of poor individual stove design, or inadequate preheating of the exhaust tube, resulting in inefficient draft to pull the smoke through.
  • Rocket mass heater exhaust is cool, around 35°C, which means in some conditions it is denser than the ambient air. Conventional chimneys may not be suitable for discharge without additional energy inputs. (RMH, p. 93)
  • Horizontal exhaust vents may not be compatible with local building codes

Well I am off; well just a little bit, but I needs to get back to work. I must Keep on Keeping On!
