Aquaponics Basement System Organic/ Food 10 Tips Update Part 2




Urban agriculture is the practice of cultivating, processing, and distributing food in or around a village, town, or city.[1] Urban agriculture can also involve animal husbandry, aquaculture, agroforestry, and horticulture. These activities also occur in peri-urban areas as well.[2] 

Urban farming is generally practiced for income-earning or food-producing activities, though in some communities the main impetus is recreation and relaxation.[3]

Urban agriculture contributes to food security and food safety in two ways: first, it increases the amount of food available to people living in cities, and second, it allows fresh vegetables, fruits, and meat products to be made available to urban consumers. It decreases food deserts.

A common and efficient form of urban agriculture is the biointensive method. Because urban agriculture promotes energy-saving local food production, urban and peri-urban agriculture are generally seen as sustainable agriculture. Another aspect of urban farming, especially in densely populated American cities, is the use of grow-bags to raise a wide range of crops.

 Many apartment dwellers with no yards to speak of, or people with very small yards, will set up these bags on a balcony or thin strip of land. Also, many types of hanging bags are available to plant, expanding the area available for planting.

The bags themselves are made from a variety of materials, including canvas, weed barrier fabric, and polyester, all having semi-porus properties so the soil can drain adequately. The term "Bagriculture" was coined in 1998 by Los Angeles animator and amateur archaeologist Rudy Zappa Martinez to describe this type of agriculture.

The recognition of environmental degradation within cities through the relocation of resources to serve urban populations[4] has inspired the implementation of different schemes of urban agriculture across the developed and developing world. From historic models such as Machu Picchu to designs for new productive city farms, the idea of locating agriculture in or around the city takes on many characteristics.

History

Community wastes were used in ancient Egypt to feed urban farming.[5] In Machu Picchu water was conserved and reused as part of the stepped architecture of the city, and vegetable beds were designed to gather sun in order to prolong the growing season.[5]

Allotment gardens came up in Germany in the early 19th century as a response to poverty and food insecurity.[6] Victory gardens sprouted during WWI and WWII and were fruit, vegetable, and herb gardens in US, Canada, and UK.

 This effort was undertaken by citizens to reduce pressure on food production that was to support the war effort. Community gardening in most communities are open to the public and provide space for citizens to cultivate plants for food or recreation. A community gardening program that is well-established is Seattle's P-Patch.

The grass roots permaculture movement has been hugely influential in the renaissance of urban agriculture throughout the world.

The idea of supplemental food production beyond rural farming operations and distant imports is not new and has been used during war times and the Great Depression when food shortage issues arose. As early as 1893, citizens of a depression-struck Detroit were asked to use any vacant lots to grow vegetables.

They were nicknamed Pingree's Potato Patches after the mayor, Hazen S. Pingree, who came up with the idea. He intended for these gardens to produce income, food supply, and even boost self independence during times of hardship. During the first World War president Woodrow Wilson called upon all American citizens to utilize any available open space for food growth, seeing this as a way to pull them out of a potentially damaging situation.

Because most of Europe was consumed with war, they were unable to produce sufficient food supplies to be shipped to the U.S., and a new plan was implemented with the intent to feed the U.S. and even supply a surplus to other countries in need. By the year 1919 over 5 million plots were growing food and over 500 million pounds of produce was harvested.

A very similar practice came into use during the Great Depression that provided a purpose, a job, and food to those who would otherwise be without anything during such harsh times. In this case these efforts helped to raise spirits socially as well as to boost economical growth.

Over 2.8 million dollars worth of food was produced from the subsistence gardens during the Depression. By the time of the Second World War the War/Food Administration set up a National Victory Garden Program that set out to systematically establish functioning agriculture within cities.

With this new plan in action, as many as 5.5 million Americans took part in the victory garden movement and over 9 million pounds of fruit and vegetables were grown a year, accounting for 44% of U.S.-grown produce throughout that time. With its past success in mind and with modern technology, urban agriculture today can be something to help both developed and developing nations.

  • 50% of the world's population lives in cities.[7]
  • 800 million people are involved in urban agriculture world-wide and contribute to feeding urban residents.[8]
  • Low income urban dwellers spend between 40% and 60% of their income on food each year.[9]
  • By 2015 about 26 cities in the world are expected to have a population of 10 million or more. To feed a city of this size at least 6,000 tonnes (6,600 tons) of food must be imported each day.[10]
  • 250 million hungry people in the world live in cities[11]

Resource and economic

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), has defined urban agriculture as:[12]
[A]n industry that produces, processes and markets food and fuel, largely in response to the daily demand of consumers within a town, city, or metropolis, on land and water dispersed throughout the urban and peri-urban area, applying intensive production methods, using and reusing natural resources and urban wastes to yield a diversity of crops and livestock.
The definition of urban agriculture as an industry that responds to the nutritional demands of a city, from within that city, with the use and reuse of that city's resources while acknowledging economic and resource use does not reconcile aspects of regional health, food security, and application of grassroots organizations.
(This definition is based on the work of Luc Mougeot of the International Development Research Centre and used in technical and training publications by UN-HABITAT's Urban Management Programme, FAO's Special Programme for Food Security, and international agricultural research centres, such as CIRAD.)

Environmental

The Council on Agriculture, Science and Technology, (CAST) is an international consortium of scientific and professional societies based in Ames Iowa that compiles and communicates credible science-based information to policy makers, media, private sector, and the public. CAST defines urban agriculture to include aspects of environmental health, remediation, and recreation:[13]
Urban agriculture is a complex system encompassing a spectrum of interests, from a traditional core of activities associated with the production, processing, marketing, distribution, and consumption, to a multiplicity of other benefits and services that are less widely acknowledged and documented. These include recreation and leisure; economic vitality and business entrepreneurship, individual health and well-being; community health and well being; landscape beautification; and environmental restoration and remediation.
Modern planning and design initiatives are more responsive to this model of urban agriculture because it fits within the current scope of sustainable design. The definition allows for a multitude of interpretations across cultures and time. Frequently it is tied to policy decisions to build sustainable cities.[14]

Food security

Access to nutritious food is another perspective in the effort to locate food and livestock production in cities. With the tremendous influx of world population to urban areas, the need for fresh and safe food is increased. The Community Food Security Coalition (CFSC) defines food security as:[15]
All persons in a community having access to culturally acceptable, nutritionally adequate food through local, non-emergency sources at all times.

Aquaponics Basement System Organic/ Food Grade Overview 101 Part 1 of 2




Aquaponics /ˈækwəˈpɒnɨks/ or pisciponics is a sustainable food production system that combines a traditional aquaculture (raising aquatic animals such as snails, fish, crayfish or prawns in tanks) with hydroponics (cultivating plants in water) in a symbiotic environment.

In aquaculture, effluents accumulate in the water, increasing toxicity for the fish. This water is led to a hydroponic system where the by-products from the aquaculture are broken down by nitrogen fixing bacteria, then filtered out by the plants as vital nutrients, after which the cleansed water is recirculated back to the animals.

As existing hydroponic and aquaculture farming techniques form the basis for all aquaponics systems, the size, complexity, and types of foods grown in an aquaponics system can vary as much as any system found in either distinct farming discipline.[1]

History

 

Aquaponics has ancient roots, although there is some debate on its first occurrence:
  • Aztec cultivated agricultural islands known as chinampas and are considered by some as the first form of aquaponics for agricultural use[2][3] where plants were raised on stationary (and sometime movable) islands in lake shallows and waste materials dredged from the Chinampa canals and surrounding cities are used to manually irrigate the plants.[4][5]
  • South China and Thailand who cultivated and farmed rice in paddy fields in combination with fish are cited as examples of early aquaponics. These polycultural farming systems existed in many Far Eastern countries and raised fish such as the oriental loach (泥鳅, ドジョウ),[6] swamp eel (黄鳝, 田鰻), Common (鯉魚, コイ) and crucian carp (鯽魚)[7] as well as pond snails (田螺) in the paddies.[8][9]

The development of modern aquaponics is often attributed to the various works of the New Alchemy Institute and the works of Dr. Mark McMurtry et al. at the North Carolina State University.[1]

Inspired by the successes of the New Alchemy Institute, and the reciprocating aquaponics techniques developed by Dr. Mark McMurtry et al., other institutes soon followed suit.

Starting in 1997, Dr. James Rakocy and his colleagues at the University of the Virgin Islands researched and developed the use of Deep Water Culture hydroponic grow beds in a large scale aquaponics system.[10]

The first aquaponics research in Canada was a small system added onto existing aquaculture research at a research station in Lethbridge, Alberta.

Canada saw a rise in aquaponics setups throughout the ’90s, predominantly as commercial installations raising high value crops such as trout and lettuce.

 A setup based on the deep water system developed at the University of Virgin Islands was built in a greenhouse at Brooks, Alberta where Dr. Nick Savidov and colleagues researched aquaponics from a background of plant science.

The team made findings on rapid root growth in aquaponics systems, on closing the solid waste loop, and that because of certain advantages in the system over traditional aquaculture, the system can run well at a low pH level, which is favoured by plants but not fish.

The Edmonton Aquaponics Society in Northern Alberta is adapting Dr. Savidov's commercially sized system to a smaller scale prototype that can be operated by families, small groups, or restaurants. They intend to further develop the closed solid waste loop.[11]

The Caribbean island of Barbados created an initiative to start aquaponics systems at home, with revenue generated by selling produce to tourists in an effort to reduce growing dependence on imported food.[12][13][14]

In Bangladesh, the world's most densely populated country, most farmers use agrochemicals to enhance food production and storage life though the country lacks oversight on safe levels of chemicals in foods for human consumption.[15]

To combat this issue a team led by Professor Dr. M.A. Salam at the Department of Aquaculture of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh has created plans for a low cost aquaponics system to provide chemical free produce and fish for people living in adverse climatic conditions such as salinity-prone southern part and flood-prone haor area in the eastern region.[16][17]

Recent years have seen a shift towards community integration of aquaponics, such as the nonprofit foundation Growing Power that offers Milwaukee youth job opportunities and training while growing food for their community.

The model has spawned several satellite projects in other cities, such as New Orleans where the Vietnamese fisherman community has suffered from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, and in the South Bronx in New York City.[18]

In addition, aquaponic gardeners from all around the world have gathered in online community sites and forums to openly share their experiences and promote the development of this form of gardening.[19]

Update on the Rocket Stove Heater Build

Recorded on October 28, 2013 using a Flip Video camera. Here is a quick look at what I got built already, but I need to tweak it already.

As it is throwing the smoke back out the feed tube. I think I made the system here to compact. I believe I will have to extend the tank to let the inside riser create a stronger drafting effect.

I'll get to it as soon as I get some other stuff done for my cousin since I am using his equipment and scrap I guess that is only fair. Once I get It working correctly I'll do some grinding and painting on It.

I am creating videos for those who are interested in Sustainable Living, Alternative gardening, Organic foods,Growing their own fish, and much more.

 I belong to several like minded Meetups and I am trying to start and run one of my own called "Living & Growing for Our Tomorrows, Sustainable Healthy Foods" You can the link for It in past post and I will be putting a direct link here soon in the side bar.

I am still trying to wind down from the season of Well Service work and looking to creep into some Gardening and some more experimenting with gizmos and gadgets such as these Rocket Stoves and Gassifiers. Until next Time Angels.

The Meet Up Group For the Aquaponics Build at Sowles Well Services


Hey all! How have you been? Me I am still Busy, busy, busy. Going a hundred miles an hour and only getting ten feet up the road on a full tank.

I have started a Meet Up Group to try and get others interested in Our Aquaponics Garden build. Here in Indiana. The Site is Located in Hebron and is a private Home owners Lot. Which I am currently building our first Test run of the Aquponics System.

We both have had gardens in the past and a Traditional Garden is so much more work and the pay off is a hit or miss for most of us backyard Gardeners. The Weather,  the Time, The effort, and the Labor is some times to demanding for us. With the Weeds, the Birds, the Rodents, and the Bugs not to mention the possibility of disease.

I have set two Meet Ups already in the first month of starting the Group and so far Only I and my Sponsor have showed up. I know it will take some Time it always does. To build a following let alone a tight knit Group dedicated to seeing this Venture through.

I know many don't want to do the dirty work that I am currently doing by myself. And getting things ordered up and running is always a drag. But this is where I am at today. Out of Money and lacking time to get everything done. The Season is changing and I am running out of good working weather.

So I am looking for others in the Greater Chicago Land area or even the Tri-State area to Share Ideas with, to teach, and learn from others with. I am sure there are many backyard Gardeners that could teach me many tricks and tips. As I can show them some as well. But I am looking for the new and Organic way of producing Healthy and Nutritional Foods Organically. And on a smaller piece of land or even in Ones own Basements, Back porch,  or in their Garages.

Here are some recycled Pressure tanks from the Well Service Company. I help out from time to time to pay for the use of the land I am using to Build this Aquaponics Garden on. I have turned these seven tanks into my Filtration system. I have access to these use tanks from time to to time. I will get a video up as soon as I can. Most likely after I  get them installed and working. We are Saving money and being as Green as possible as often as possible.

Here is a Rocket Heater I am trying to build for the first Time for our Garden's Green house. These are some of the metal tanks we come across and haul away for our customers. We usually just scrap them out but if we can build something worth building we might do it if we can find the time. And it is worth our wild to do.

Come One, Come All, I am Calling Out to You!


Hey All, I have created a Meet Up Page or Account in hopes of starting up a group interested in Learning and sharing their Aquaponics secretes with each other. It would be for those of us in the greater Chicago land area mostly but everyone is welcome to join to share and learn of what we have to offer.

So far as of today Oct. 06 2013 we have five members. We have had one Meet up so far and two of us showed and so Its begun. We have a Meetup scheduled for  tomorrow Oct 7th at 6:30pm at the Aquaponics Garden build site in Hebron IN. This is short notice I know and I am sorry I will work on getting better.  You can go to Meetup.com and search for our group Its called "Living & Growing for Our Tomorrows" Sustainable Healthy Foods. There you will find all of our pictures and past Meetups But we are New less than a month old so far and we are just figuring things out both with Meetup and the Garden  too.

I am the organizer so I will be posting here and there as I do with everything I am doing so come and check us out. We are hoping to button up the Green house this month and I have started messing around with a rocket heater just this past Friday I have it roughly figured out and will get pictures and maybe a video soon of It. It is made from two recycled metal pressure tanks and some square tube stock that we had lying around in the scrap pile. I will also start selling some recycled Fiberglass tanks to be used in your own Aquaponics filtering systems or your Pond filtering systems. I'll be placing video here soon of these tanks and how we are using them in our system.

Our system build has fallen way off of schedule as we have been plagued with mechanical breakdowns and many repairs to our vehicles at the Well Service these last few months. Right now our 1,000 gallon holding tank is being used to drill Wells with as our water truck is going under a major brake overhaul. Update of Our Aquaponics Build at Sowles Well Service June 4th 2013

Recorded on June 4, 2013 using a Flip Video camera. Hello All I lost about four minutes of this clip because I trimmed the wrong way. Sorry about that. Yeah I am still learning to use the FlipCam and It's Simple software.

Hey I told if I can do It you can too. I am No rocket Scientist thats for sure. But I never claimed to be. I will need to do some more work on the sump pit box and I still want to get the other two tanks cut and their bladders removed and cleaned up and ready.

I will be looking at some Bulk head fittings that we have here at the house. We got a couple lots at an Auction a while back and I'll have to see what I can dig out out the creates that I can make do the job. There is not a lot of pressure in these systems. Everything can be unglued and hand tight; well mostly everything.

I got the longer cut offs up to the Green house and I still need to fit them together as the other cut offs were just to much to piece together. I was losing my mind trying to figure it out. So now it is easy three ten foot pieces for each thirty foot run and two couplings for each pipe. They'll sit nicely on the cement blocks and it will make it easier to clean out when the time comes.



As I said this is being done on the fly nightly after work and I work on It when I can to the beat of a different drummer sort of speak. As I don't drive I have to work around the boss's schedule.

But It will get done eventually. The box is just some thing to keep the dirt out of It. The ground is mostly clay kind of like modeling clay soft and mold able when wet or moist. Hard as brick when dry. So I will line the bottom of the pit with patio blocks and cover it with a lid. This will help keep It cool in summer. Warm in winter and keep debris from entering the tanks as well.



As I was saying I laid out the piping for the feed troughs that will be outside this year. If I get them in time. I don't have a whole of time left to get this part up and running for this years growing cycle. But if I do run with it. I can always throw a quick Hoop house up with this cattle panel stuff. Its fast and easy and very reasonable. But I think I'll use six by six's instead of the Telephone poles if it come to rushing this Green house build. They are much lighter and easier to set. But I am cheap so I'll have to see how fast it needs to be slapped up.



I should just cut four more telephone poles up shouldn't I, Hum. I might do that and have them ready or even set them. First I want to see if I can grow anything. Speaking of I need to start my seeds this week.

I pressure washed the holding tank and the large fish tank as well I got the top cut out of the fish tank. I did that with a grinder and a cutting wheel. It was very easy; messy but easy. I used the dirt from the sump pit to refill the dirt box and placed the rest in front of the dirt box so I could climb straight onto It with out a ladder. I'll Land scape that up some and then I'll get some more dirt from the dirt hills from the pond. And then I'll do the same with the sump pit on two sides, the front and the right side or the west side. On the east side is where the well is and the south side faces the Green house so I'll keep them level, but I will use only wood chips on the Green house side as this is where the plumbing will be.



Getting closer YouTube I have tons to do still, but most of this stuff will go rather quickly once I get the tanks plumbed. I found my fish for this year. I am not sure if there Channel cats or Bull heads. But there are three balls in my uncles pond right now as of today. But if I wait to long the bass will devourer them before I get them into a tank. And the water is way to cold for me to brave It. I'll need a John boat or canoe and a net.

There is usually about hundred Frys in a ball like the ones in the pond, but as I said you don't have much time to catch them before the bass or some other fish or bird eat them up.

The pond is all open water no trees and not many places to hide in for these little guys that's why they ball up the way they do. Protection!

I have a large fifty gallon metal trough I could drag it over there and try to snag about fifty or sixty or even more. And keep them covered at the waters edge. I'll see. I don't have too much Time on my hands, but we'll see what we can do.




If their Channels I grow them Out for eating. If their Bullheads I'll cut them lose in the river or give them to the neighbor for his pond.

Well I got to run. I need to get showered and go to bed. Busy day tomorrow if I want to catch some of those Frys I'll need to be rested.

Update of Our Aquaponics Build at Sowles Well Service May 28th 2013

Recorded on May 28, 2013 using a Flip Video camera. This one is another short one. My batteries were about drained. I just wanted to show you all I got the major part of the sump pit dug today. And that I straitened up some.

Well I got to run because I am under the Gun.

 P.S. Sorry the Video stopped suddenly because the Battery died. I was saying I'll have to take the one thousand gallon tank down and add some more dirt and then water it down and pack it down into the dirt box. I should of known better, but I am doing this all on the fly after work And I am tried after the day is done. Again I'll do better as I get some extra time. CYA !



Well I finally got it over here for ya's guys. I am stuck for cash right now so I'll need to find some more. I need to order some stuff from off the Web.  Mostly uni seals. I'll need to get some treated plywood  three 1/2 inch x 8 ft x 4 ft about three sheets; to line the sump pit.

 I still need more cement blocks about 12, and some 2x2 patio blocks about 8 to put a floor into the sump pit for the tanks to sit level upon. But I did get most of the grass cut today  May30th 2013. And then the mower started to act up. I think we'll need to flush the fuel lines or clean the tanks out even. It's a Big mower a Dixie Chopper a good mower to have for large lawns. 

I truly need to get my seeds going too. Maybe I'll get to it this weekend. Sunday maybe. Well I have the advantage of the Ponds water to jump start our system here. But for one guy it is a lot of work to do. Especially when you are disabled somewhat. But I am lucky to have the tools and equipment at my disposal as some of you may not. Hopefully you have a couple of strong backs and a weak mind or two you can tap into. LOL

It shouldn't be long now. I'll get something done here soon, but I am worn out already and I haven't even begun yet. But this I hope is the hardest part of this Aquaponics stuff; the build. I hope anyways. Well I talk at ya's soon.

Well these next few videos are chopped up some my battery was dying and I am still under a 10 minute limit plus I don't have any extra editing software yet. But I said I'd try and post when I get something done so here it is. I will however place them all in the same Blog Posting so you can find them.

Recorded on May 20, 2013 using a Flip Video camera. Sorry I have still got a Ten Minute Limit on my videos and I lack the editing skills and software to edit this videos, but I am working on it too. Yea I got out of square a little I was using a rope and not string so That may of through me off a bit. Funny how things work my other cousin came by after the Cattle Panel was up today and Gave me a big spool of string. Well its good cotton string and I'll use it to tie tomatoes and beans etc. I had to trim three minute off this video to get it to load from my FlipShare software.

As soon as I get the uni seals and the NFT Pipes glued to the same length and all the holes cut I'll put water in the one thousand gallon tank. But before all that I 'll need to get the six Inch drain install as well as the sump pit and all the filtering tanks. Well I got to run because I need to make some more dough.

Recorded on May 20, 2013 using a Flip Video camera. I am sorry I am not that skilled yet at making these videos but I'll keep trying until I am. Here is the 400 gallon Fish tank and my zone tanks. I am also doing all this on the fly after work as I don't drive my cousin picks me up and take me home at his convenience and I don't always have the time to get everything in here But I will try and update the videos at the Blog later when I get the spare time to think and plan. Well I go to run because I am under the gun.
